Carnival Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean: A Disappointing Encounter with Carnival
12/17/20248 min read
Our 1st Carnival cruise was a 5 day round trip from Galveston, TX to Cozumel and Yucatán followed immediately with a B2B cruise round trip Galveston to Cozumel. Having never sailed Carnival, we really wanted to get a good feel for them.
Perhaps a nine day trip on the same ship limited our understanding of the cruise line. We can honestly say that Carnival does not compare favorably with any other line we’ve sailed, including their sister company Princess Cruise line.
Introduction to the Cruise Lines
Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International are two prominent players in the cruise industry, each known for their distinct offerings and philosophies. Carnival, often referred to as the "Fun Ship" line, is recognized for its vibrant atmosphere, appealing predominantly to families and young travelers. The cruise line boasts a fleet that accommodates a wide range of budgets, making cruises accessible to a larger demographic. Carnival is particularly renowned for its engaging onboard activities, lively entertainment, and casual dining options that cater to guests looking for a relaxed yet enjoyable holiday experience.
On the other hand, Royal Caribbean sets itself apart with innovation and a focus on experiential cruising. The line has made headlines with its state-of-the-art ships, which feature unique amenities such as surf simulators, ice-skating rinks, and skydiving simulators, appealing to adventure seekers and families alike. Additionally, Royal Caribbean tends to offer a more upscale experience with more dining options, refined furnishings, and itineraries that include renowned destinations worldwide. With a reputation for excellent customer service and high-quality entertainment, Royal Caribbean positions itself as a luxury option in the market.
Despite their differences, both cruise lines aim to provide unforgettable experiences at sea, each striving to create lasting memories for their guests. As potential travelers consider which cruise line to choose, it is essential to understand these foundational aspects, for they lay the groundwork for a more in-depth comparison between Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean in subsequent sections. This exploration will help clarify the strengths and weaknesses of each, ultimately guiding readers in making informed travel decisions.
Initial Impressions: The Aesthetic and Atmosphere
Upon boarding the Carnival Breeze, the first impressions derived from the aesthetic and atmosphere play a crucial role in shaping the overall cruise experience. As guests step onto the ship, they are greeted by a vibrant and colorful environment, characteristic of Carnival's cruise line. However, the initial excitement can sometimes be overshadowed by cleanliness and design inconsistencies. The decorations, while intended to exude a lively and cheerful vibe, may come off as overly kitschy for some guests, leaving them yearning for a more refined aesthetic.
In stark contrast, Royal Caribbean's vessels tend to emphasize modern decor and sophisticated design elements. The ambiance aboard Royal Caribbean is marked by an air of elegance, as the interiors often feature clean lines, contemporary artwork, and well-planned spaces that facilitate a sense of relaxation and tranquility. This bespoke atmosphere fosters a more upscale cruising environment, which can resonate deeply with guests seeking a premium experience.
Regarding cleanliness, both cruise lines strive to maintain high standards; however, the details can be telling. Upon examining the common areas on the Carnival Breeze, some areas may present signs of wear, with slight signs of neglect evident in high-traffic zones. On the other hand, Royal Caribbean places a strong emphasis on cruise cleanliness, ensuring that public spaces are not only immaculate but also inviting, enhancing the overall enjoyment of their guests.
During our nine days on Breeze many of the hand sanitizer stations remained empty, even after reporting them. No one enforces hand sanitation or washing before entering the buffet on Lido or any dining. This is a practice that all others we’ve sail even pre-pandemic had in play. Guest would spill drinks in the elevators and hallways and the mess would be left there for hours on end. On our 1st leg of the b2b, we had hit a cold front going back to Galveston, which caused a large layer of salt covering the glass on the outer decks and balconies. It wasn’t until the final day of our 2nd trip for Carnival to clean this. Having sailed over a dozen times, we’ve always seen the crew swiftly clean the ships viewing areas on other ships.
The initial aesthetic and atmosphere serve as the foundation for the cruising journey. While Carnival Breeze attempts to deliver a whimsical experience, it can fall short in areas of coherence and upkeep. In comparison, Royal Caribbean leans towards an atmosphere that combines elegance and cleanliness, leaving guests with a resounding sense of satisfaction as they embark on their voyages.
Staff Friendliness and Service Quality
The experience of cruise-goers can significantly hinge on the friendliness and service quality provided by the crew members aboard. The Carnival Breeze, part of the renowned Carnival Cruise line, has gained attention for varying levels of staff engagement and service. While some passengers reported friendly interactions, others found the attitude of the staff to be less than satisfactory. This disparity in service can have a profound impact on the overall cruise experience, as personalized attention often contributes to a sense of warmth and hospitality.
In contrast, Royal Caribbean has built a reputation for their highly attentive and engaging staff. Many travelers noted that crew members went above and beyond to ensure that guests felt welcomed and valued. The proactive approach of Royal Caribbean’s staff often includes checking on guests and addressing needs promptly. This aspect of service is critical for enhancing the cruise journey, as it fosters a welcoming atmosphere where passengers feel comfortable seeking assistance or engaging in conversation.
When comparing these two cruise lines, passengers have emphasized that service quality is not just about completing tasks but rather about the overall attitude exhibited by crew members. On Carnival, some guests expressed disappointment with the level of engagement, stating that crew interactions felt rushed or mechanical. The contrast with Royal Caribbean stood out, where many highlighted the genuine interest shown by the staff in their well-being. These interactions involve more than just fulfilling duties; they encompass a hospitality ethos that elevates the cruise experience from ordinary to exceptional.
Ultimately, while individual experiences may vary, the general sentiment leans towards a more favorable view of Royal Caribbean's service quality. An attentive, friendly, and responsive crew significantly enhances guest satisfaction, which is a critical consideration for travelers when choosing between these two popular cruise lines.
Dining Experiences: A Culinary Comparison
The dining experiences offered by Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International present a unique juxtaposition that significantly influences travelers' overall satisfaction. On one hand, the Carnival Breeze boasts a commendable reputation for its breakfast offerings and upscale dining experiences included in the cruise fare. Passengers frequently praise the availability of multiple options that cater to diverse palates, from fresh pastries to hearty breakfast staples. The relaxed ambiance in dining areas allows patrons to savor their meals without feeling rushed, contributing to a pleasant start to each day onboard.
Furthermore, Carnival Breeze distinguishes itself with specialty dining options that, although available at an extra cost, promise an elevated culinary adventure. Dishes crafted by renowned chefs and a commitment to quality ingredients are often highlighted as key benefits of choosing Carnival for dining experiences. The opportunity to indulge in varied cuisines, including Mexican, Italian, and Asian, adds an exciting layer to onboard dining, appealing to a broad spectrum of tastes.
In comparing the dining experiences on these two prominent cruise lines, it is evident that Carnival Cruise Line emerges as a favorable option for those prioritizing culinary quality and variety. While Royal Caribbean has its highlights, Carnival's approach to dining seems better aligned with fulfilling passengers' expectations for an enjoyable and satisfying cruise experience.
Activities and Entertainment Options
When evaluating the activities and entertainment options available aboard Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean, it is essential to understand how each cruise line embodies its unique branding philosophy. Carnival promotes its vessels as 'Fun Ships,' which is evident in the variety of activities aimed at ensuring guests have a lively and enjoyable experience. From the iconic poolside deck parties and lively trivia contests to themed nights and diverse live music performances, Carnival successfully creates an atmosphere of excitement and social interaction. Family-friendly features, including water slides and mini-golf, further enhance the appeal to younger passengers, making it apparent that fun and leisure are mainstays of the Carnival experience.
In contrast, Royal Caribbean offers a broader array of entertainment options. The cruise line positions itself as a provider of unique experiences, reflected in its innovative attractions. With features like surf simulators, skydiving simulators, and ice skating rinks, Royal Caribbean targets a guest demographic seeking more than traditional cruising activities. Additionally, the line is known for its high-quality stage productions, featuring Broadway-style shows that captivate audiences and elevate onboard entertainment. The Adventure Ocean children's program also caters to younger guests with a focus on educational and engaging activities, further diversifying the range of entertainment available.
While both cruise lines aim to offer enjoyable experiences, their approaches differ significantly. Carnival favors an informal, vibrant atmosphere that resonates with guests looking for playful, social activities. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean’s emphasis on diverse and innovative entertainment ensures that a wide array of interests is addressed. Ultimately, the choice between Carnival and Royal Caribbean may hinge upon individual passenger preferences—those seeking unabashed fun may find Carnival's offerings more appealing, whereas travelers desiring a richer tapestry of experiences might lean toward the extensive options available on Royal Caribbean.
Overall Experience: Ranking and Recommendations
When comparing Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean, it is crucial to evaluate the overall experience aboard each cruise line. While both companies offer unique features and services, there were noticeable differences during our exploration of the Carnival Breeze versus the offerings from Royal Caribbean. One significant aspect to consider is customer service; Royal Caribbean consistently stands out with its attentive and friendly staff, ensuring that guests feel welcomed and valued throughout their journey.
In terms of onboard activities, Royal Caribbean offers a diverse range of entertainment options, including state-of-the-art theaters, ice skating rinks, and surf simulators, which tend to captivate a wider audience. On the other hand, Carnival Breeze provides a more relaxed atmosphere, focusing heavily on fun experiences such as water slides, live music, and themed parties. However, those seeking variety in their onboard entertainment may find Carnival's offerings somewhat limiting in comparison to Royal Caribbean.
Dining experiences also differ significantly between the two cruise lines. Royal Caribbean's culinary options are often praised for their quality and variety, including specialty restaurants that cater to different tastes. Conversely, Carnival Breeze tends to provide more casual dining experiences, which may appeal to families but might not satisfy those seeking gourmet meals. Additionally, Royal Caribbean’s innovative dining experiences, such as robotic bartenders and chef's table events, set them apart as a leader in cruise culinary offerings.
Ultimately, while both Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean have their merits, the decision may hinge on individual preferences. For those inclined towards vibrant entertainment and an exceptional dining experience, Royal Caribbean may prove to be the better option. However, if relaxation and casual enjoyment are priorities, Carnival Breeze might be the more fitting choice. Potential cruisers should carefully evaluate these aspects to ensure a fulfilling vacation experience that aligns with their expectations.

On the other hand, criticisms regarding service quality, food offerings, or cleanliness may resonate more strongly with those who have sailed with Royal Caribbean. The latter is often praised for its extensive onboard options, dining experiences, and superior service, which foster a more luxurious and innovative cruise environment. Comparing the two cruise lines highlights the need for potential cruisers to identify what they value most in their vacation experience.
Carnival may still find favor among certain vacationers, particularly families looking for an energetic cruise experience filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.
